We all use our heaters more in the fall and winter because it’s colder, obviously. But do we always do what’s best in terms of making sure we aren’t breaking the bank to heat our homes? Here are some good tips for keeping your heating bill down.
Turn down the thermostat: “The rule of thumb is that you can save about 3% on your heating bill for every degree that you set back your thermostat” full time, says Bill Prindle, deputy director for the nonprofit American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). Turn down the thermostat 10 degrees when you go to work, and again when you go to bed — a total of 16 hours a day — and you can save about 14% on your heating bill, says Prindle.
Keep the fireplace damper closed: It’s no secret that heat rises, and by keeping the damper open you essentially have a hole in your roof! Close it to eliminate the loss of substantial amounts of heat.
Keep vents clear: If you block the heating vents, they can’t do their job and circulate the warm air as they should.
Replace old weather stripping around doors and windows: It’s not something you probably have on the top of your to do list because it probably isn’t something you think about all the time but most weather stripping needs to be replaced every few years due to normal wear and tear.
Close doors to the rooms you aren’t spending time in: Why pay to heat a room that you wont be in!
So there you go, a few tips for saving a few dollars on your heating bill from Kitsap Real Estate Blog.
